Part of our research for Japan involved watching the 1967
Bond film You Only Live Twice that was set in Japan. Little did we know that
the film is not fiction but actually a documentary. Just before we left the
volcano that housed Blofeld’s lair erupted for real. Then in Kyoto whilst
exploring the 17th century Nijo Castle, we come across a display of classic
cars featuring a silver 1965 Aston Martin DB5. The best cover for a spy trying
to remain incognito while driving around in a highly visible 1960s Aston Martin
would be a classic car show. Nijo Castle also features 2000 priceless pictures
each containing 600 sheets of gold leaf. Maybe Goldfinger had been sniffing
around. What sealed the deal is the car show also featured an Alfa Romeo Disco
Volante, obviously purloined from Largo when he was captured in Thunderball. These
coincidences leave us shaken and stirred!
If your research didn't include "Lost in Translation" (2003) with Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson, you might want to watch it post trip...
