Kyoto Railway Museum

From seeing some of the biggest things in the world, we are now experiencing one of the fastest. Japan loves all their trains, not just the Shinkansen. The Kyoto train station itself is a treat to the eyes and senses, all 10+ floors of it.

We spent an afternoon at the Kyoto Railway Museum (Mum and Dad Butler would have loved it) looking at engines from post-war art deco splendour to the cutting edge Eva Shinkansen update that aims to go 300km/h. It is painted in purple and green livery as a tribute to a 1990s Transformers-like anime series Evangelion. Yes, the train turns into a robot. Awesome.

There's even a little cafe in an old carriage where you can get ice cream or little sandwiches with the crusts cut off. The museum is one for train buffs but also for those with small children, especially if it is a rainy day, as most of the exhibits can be climbed on, or manipulated in interactive ways. Oh happy day.
